Does your overbite actually need treatment?
Deep bites are among the most common bite problems we see. A large systematic review of malocclusion studies worldwide found a deep overbite in roughly 24% of people, and Indian population studies report an increased overbite in a similar range — close to three in ten. Most of these are mild and need nothing. We recommend treatment when we see one or more of the following:
Signs a deep bite is worth treating
- Your lower front teeth touch the roof of your mouth when you bite together, or have left bite marks or soreness behind the upper front teeth. This is palatal impingement — the clearest sign a deep bite is doing damage.
- Visible wear on the front teeth — edges that look flattened, chipped or shorter than they used to be, because the front teeth take force they were never meant to absorb.
- Your lower teeth are barely visible when you bite — the upper teeth cover most or all of them.
- Jaw tiredness, clicking or pain — a deep bite can overload the jaw joint. If this is your main complaint, our TMJ and jaw pain assessment often runs alongside the bite assessment.
- You avoid smiling because of a “gummy” or heavy upper-teeth look — a deep bite often shows this way.
If none of these apply and the overlap is modest, we will tell you that plainly at your consultation — treating an overbite that isn't causing harm is treatment you don't need.
A deep overbite is one of the most common bite problems worldwide — found in roughly 24% of people in a global systematic review of malocclusion studies, with Indian population studies reporting an increased overbite in close to three in ten. General research figures; individual cases vary.

Overbite or protruding teeth? They're treated differently
Many patients who come to us saying “I have an overbite” actually mean their upper front teeth stick out forwards — what people call buck teeth. Clinically these are two different problems, and telling them apart is the first thing your orthodontist does, because it changes the treatment plan:

The two often occur together — a deep bite with the upper teeth also tipped forward — and when they do, we correct both in one course of treatment rather than two.
Causes
What causes an overbite — and why the cause decides your treatment
An overbite is either dental — the jaws are in proportion, but the teeth have over-erupted or tilted into a deep overlap — or skeletal — the lower jaw itself is short or set back, so no amount of tooth movement alone fully fixes the profile. Genetics drives most of it; childhood habits like prolonged thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting and early loss of baby teeth contribute; and worn or missing back teeth can deepen a bite in adults because the front teeth over-close to compensate.
This distinction is exactly why we take records — photographs, bite analysis and X-rays — before quoting you a plan. A dental deep bite responds fully to braces or clear aligners. A skeletal pattern in a growing child can often be guided with functional appliances — one of Dr. Sree Cumar's named areas of expertise — while a severe skeletal case in an adult may need jaw correction combined with orthodontics. Being told which one you are, before treatment starts, is the difference between a plan that works and one that relapses.

What happens if a deep overbite is left untreated?
Not every overbite worsens — but the deep ones rarely improve on their own, and the damage they do is cumulative:
The cumulative cost of a deep bite
- Accelerated tooth wear. The front teeth grind edge-on-edge with every bite. Over years, the enamel flattens and shortens — and rebuilding worn front teeth later costs considerably more than correcting the bite would have.
- Gum damage behind the upper teeth. Lower incisors biting into the palate traumatise the gum tissue, which can lead to recession and soreness that never quite settles.
- Jaw joint strain. A deep bite forces the lower jaw into an over-closed position. In some patients this feeds into clicking, muscle tiredness and TMJ pain — a problem our founder treats as a named speciality.
- Harder cleaning, harder repairs. Crowded, over-closed front teeth trap plaque and make future crowns, veneers or implants in that area technically harder to do well.
Treatment routes
How we correct an overbite at Arasu Dental Care
Overbite correction is orthodontic treatment planned around the cause, your age and how deep the bite is. These are the routes we use, from most common to least:
Braces — the workhorse for deep bites
Moderate to deep overbites · our default recommendation
Fixed braces give the orthodontist precise vertical control — intruding the front teeth, levelling the bite curve and de-rotating tilted teeth — which is why they remain our default recommendation for moderate to deep overbites. Metal, ceramic (tooth-coloured), self-ligating and lingual (behind-the-teeth) options all correct the bite; the choice mainly affects visibility and cost. Typical treatment time is 12–24 months depending on depth.
Clear aligners — for mild to moderate cases
Mild–moderate overbite · nearly invisible
Clear aligners, including Invisalign, correct many overbites nearly invisibly — modern aligner systems use pressure-point features and bite ramps designed specifically for deep-bite correction. We are honest about their limit: very deep bites needing significant vertical tooth movement remain more predictable in braces, and we will tell you at assessment if your case is one of them rather than sell you the aligner anyway.
Growth guidance — for children and young teens

While the jaw is still growing, a skeletal overbite can often be intercepted with functional and myofunctional appliances that encourage the lower jaw forward — treatment Dr. Sree Cumar plans personally. This is why we echo the American Association of Orthodontists' advice of a first orthodontic check by around age 7: a bite guided at the right age can prevent a far bigger correction later. Jaw correction — for severe skeletal cases
A small minority of adult cases · single coordinated plan
A small minority of adult overbites are skeletal enough that orthodontics alone cannot deliver a stable result. For these we plan jaw and face correction — orthodontics combined with surgical repositioning — as a single coordinated plan. If you're in this group, you'll know it from your records appointment, not after a year in braces.

Honest considerations before you start
What we will tell you plainly at assessment
- Correction is stable only if you retain it. Deep bites have a known tendency to partially rebound after treatment. Retainers — usually a fixed wire plus a removable retainer worn as advised — are part of the treatment, not an optional extra. Skip retention and some relapse is likely; results vary between patients.
- Aligners are not equal to braces for every deep bite. If we recommend braces over aligners for your case, it is because vertical control is more predictable in brackets — not because of price.
- Adult treatment works — it just doesn't use growth. There is no upper age limit for overbite correction with healthy teeth and gums; adult skeletal cases simply have fewer non-surgical options than a growing child's.
- Gum health comes first. Active gum disease must be brought under control before tooth movement begins — moving teeth through inflamed gums risks irreversible damage. Our periodontics team handles this in-house when it's needed.
- Worn teeth may need restoring after correction. If a deep bite has already flattened your front edges, the bite correction stops further damage; rebuilding the worn edges (bonding or crowns) is a separate, smaller step we plan with you honestly.

Frequently asked questions about overbite treatment
Often, yes. Mild to moderate overbites respond well to clear aligners, and skeletal overbites in growing children can be guided with functional appliances instead of (or before) braces. Very deep bites, however, are still corrected most predictably with braces — we'll tell you honestly at assessment which group you're in.
Most cases take 12 to 24 months. Mild aligner cases can finish in 8–12 months; severe skeletal cases combining orthodontics and jaw correction can take 18–30 months. Your written plan includes your expected timeline; results and durations vary by individual.

It can. A deep bite over-closes the lower jaw, and in some patients this strains the jaw joint and muscles, showing up as clicking, tiredness or TMJ pain. Because our founder is a TMJ specialist as well as an orthodontist, both problems are assessed together here.
Deep bites have a known tendency to partially relapse, which is why retention is built into every plan — typically a fixed retainer wire plus a removable retainer worn as advised. Follow the retention plan and the correction generally holds; results vary between patients.
Rarely. Surgery is reserved for severe skeletal overbites in adults, where the jaw position itself — not just the teeth — causes the problem. The large majority of overbites we treat are corrected fully with braces, aligners or growth-guidance appliances.
