Finishing your braces or aligners isn't quite the end. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their old positions, so retainers are what make your result last. Your orthodontist fits your retainer once treatment is complete and explains exactly how, and how long, to wear it.
There are two main types — fixed retainers (a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth) and removable retainers (clear or wire retainers worn on a schedule). Which suits you depends on your case, and your specialist will recommend the right option.
