Braces for Children in Coimbatore

At Arasu Dental Care, braces for your child do more than straighten teeth — they guide teeth and jaws into position while your child is still growing, which is exactly when correction works with the body instead of against it. Treatment is planned and supervised by our MDS orthodontist, and it suits children and teens whose teeth are crowded, protruding, or not meeting properly — whether that's a seven-year-old who needs early guidance or a teenager ready for full braces.

Many parents wait because they aren't sure whether the problem is "bad enough." You don't have to decide that alone — an orthodontic check tells you clearly whether your child needs treatment now, later, or not at all.

Where to start

Does my child actually need braces?

Crooked or crowded teeth are common — research pooling 54 Indian studies found that around 35% of children aged 8–15 have some form of malocclusion (misaligned teeth or bite). That doesn't mean every child needs braces. What matters is whether the misalignment affects how your child bites, chews, speaks, cleans their teeth, or feels about smiling.

The signs that genuinely matter, and that we look for at an evaluation:

Crowded or overlapping teeth, or large gaps that aren't closing as the adult teeth come in.

Front teeth that stick out — protruding teeth are more prone to accidental injury in active kids.

Upper and lower teeth that don't meet properly — overbite, underbite, crossbite or open bite.

Mouth breathing, thumb-sucking beyond age 5, or early loss of milk teeth.

Jaws that look out of proportion, or a chin that shifts to one side when biting.

If your child lost milk teeth early, a space maintainer may be all that's needed to hold room for the adult tooth — we'll tell you honestly when the simpler option is the right one.

Timing

When should children get braces?

The honest answer: the first orthodontic check should happen around age 7 — the age recommended by orthodontic associations worldwide — but most children who need braces start them between 10 and 14, once enough adult teeth have arrived. The age-7 check isn't about starting early; it's about catching the small number of jaw-growth problems that are far easier to guide while the jaw is still growing.

Early treatment — around ages 7–10

Only some children need this phase. Where a jaw is growing too narrow, too far forward or too far back, we use growth-guidance appliances — expanders, habit-breaking appliances, functional appliances — to steer development. Done at the right time, this can shorten or simplify the braces phase later, and in some cases avoid jaw correction surgery in adulthood.

Comprehensive braces — around ages 11–14+

This is the familiar phase: brackets and wires (or aligners for suitable teens) that move the adult teeth into their final positions. Teenage years are the most efficient time to do this — the bone responds faster than in adults, and treatment typically completes in 12 to 24 months depending on the case.

Worth knowing: starting "late" is rarely a disaster. Teens — and adults — are treated successfully every day. Early evaluation is about keeping options open, not about urgency.

Who plans your child's braces

A specialist orthodontist, start to finish

Your child's braces are planned and supervised by Dr. P.S. Sree Cumar, MDS — our founder, an orthodontist with fellowships from the World Federation of Orthodontists (USA) and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, whose specialisation covers exactly what children's cases demand: dentofacial orthopedics, myofunctional appliances, fixed braces and clear aligners. Growth-stage treatment is his core specialty, not a sideline — supported by orthodontist Dr. Sneha K Achuthan, MDS.

The options

Braces options for children and teens

We plan the appliance around the child — the severity of the case, their age, how visible they want it to be, and how well they'll manage the routine. All of these are available here, so the recommendation is built around your child's teeth, not around what we happen to stock.

Metal braces - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Metal braces

Best for: most children and teens; handles every level of complexity. The toughest and most economical option — and coloured bands make them fun for younger kids.

Ceramic braces - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Ceramic braces

Best for: image-conscious teens with moderate to complex cases. Tooth-coloured and far less visible than metal — the brackets just need a little more care to stay clean.

Self-ligating braces - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Self-ligating braces

Best for: cases where fewer, quicker adjustment visits help. Low-friction clips replace elastic ties, and many patients find them more comfortable between visits.

Clear aligners - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Clear aligners (teens)

Best for: responsible teens with mild to moderate misalignment. Nearly invisible and removable — but they only work if worn 20–22 hours a day.

Visit by visit

What treatment looks like

Your child's treatment is planned by our orthodontist, not delegated — the same specialist who handles our adult braces cases and complex bite corrections. Here's the typical journey.

STEP 1

Evaluation and records

A gentle examination, X-rays and photographs. We show you exactly what's happening and whether treatment is needed now, later, or not at all — in plain language, to both the parent and the child.

STEP 2

Fitting the braces

Braces go on in a single comfortable visit of about an hour. There is no drilling and no injections are involved in fitting braces.

STEP 3

Adjustments every 4–8 weeks

Short visits to progress the treatment. Teeth feel tender for two to three days after each adjustment — soft food and, if needed, a mild pain reliever manage it well. Because we're open every day until 8:30 PM, these visits fit around school.

STEP 4

Removal and retainers

Braces come off, and retainers take over to hold the result while the bone settles. Retainers are not optional — they are what protects the investment you've just made.

School, sport and food all continue as normal, with small adjustments: a mouthguard for contact sports, and a pause on hard and sticky foods that break brackets. Most children adapt within the first fortnight.

Straight answers

What we'll tell you honestly

Braces are a long relationship — often well over a year of regular visits — so we'd rather set expectations plainly than oversell.

Four things worth knowing before you decide

  • Not every child needs early treatment. Some clinics put seven-year-olds in appliances they don't need. If observation is the right plan, we'll say so and simply review your child as they grow — at no pressure to you.
  • Results depend on wear and care. Aligners worn part-time don't work; broken brackets add months. A child who isn't ready for the routine may do better waiting a year — we'll help you judge that.
  • Hygiene has to step up. Braces trap food, and gums can swell if brushing slips. We coach every child on cleaning around brackets and check gum health at each visit — and often recommend a professional cleaning during treatment.
  • Teeth can drift back. Without retainers, teeth drift toward their old positions — this is biology, not treatment failure. Retainer wear after braces is part of the plan from day one. Individual results vary with growth, case complexity and how consistently appliances are worn.

We came in when my daughter was 8, half-expecting to be sold braces. Instead they said wait and review — and did, at no pressure, until she was ready at 11. Honest from day one.

MMohan K.

Dr. Sree Cumar explained my son's overbite with the X-rays right there in front of us. Ceramic braces, about 20 months, and the adjustment visits always fit in after school.

AAnitha S.

My teenager wanted aligners; they were straight with us that his case needed fixed braces for a proper result. Glad we listened — the finish is lovely.

VVignesh P.

Both my kids have been treated here. Clear written quote, EMI made it manageable, and the team is genuinely good with nervous children.

Results vary. Patient results shown may not be typical — outcomes and treatment time depend on your child's age, case complexity, cooperation and how consistently appliances are worn.

FAQs

Children's braces — common questions from parents

Most children who need braces start between ages 10 and 14, once enough adult teeth have come in. The first orthodontic check, though, should happen around age 7 — that's when jaw-growth problems can still be guided with simple appliances. An early check doesn't mean early treatment; often it just means we watch and wait.

Fitting braces involves no injections and doesn't hurt. Teeth feel tender for two to three days after fitting and after each adjustment — soft foods and a mild pain reliever, if needed, manage it comfortably. Most children stop noticing their braces within a couple of weeks.

Typically 12 to 24 months, depending on how complex the case is and how well appliances and elastics are worn. Early-phase growth appliances, where needed, run on their own shorter timeline before the braces phase.

Often, yes — for mild to moderate misalignment in a teen who will reliably wear them 20–22 hours a day. For complex bites or less consistent wearers, fixed braces give a more predictable result. We'll tell you honestly which suits your child after the evaluation. See our clear aligners page for more.

At Arasu Dental Care, children's braces start from ₹30,000 for metal braces, with ceramic, self-ligating and aligner options ranging higher based on the case. The quote covers the full treatment including all adjustment visits, and EMI options are available. Prices are subject to individual consultation.

Yes — provided retainers are worn as advised. Teeth naturally drift after braces come off, so retainers hold the new position while the bone stabilises. We build retainer planning into every child's treatment from the start.

Sports continue as normal with a mouthguard for contact games — we'll advise on the right type. Most foods are fine; the exceptions are hard and sticky items that can break brackets, which pause until treatment finishes.

Still have a question? Call either branch, or book a check-up and we'll answer it in person — open all 7 days. Wondering whether aligners suit a teen? See our clear aligners page.
