When it's the right call
When a tooth needs to be removed — and when it doesn't
Many patients who come to us afraid of losing a tooth don't end up needing an extraction at all. So the first thing we do is check whether the tooth can be kept. We usually recommend removing a tooth when:
Decay or a fracture has destroyed too much of the tooth to rebuild it.
Infection has spread further than a root canal can settle.
A tooth is severely loose from advanced gum disease and can't be stabilised.
A baby tooth or crowded tooth is blocking others from coming through correctly.

What's involved
Simple and surgical tooth extractions
Once we've confirmed a tooth needs to come out, the removal itself is usually straightforward and done in a single visit. Before anything begins, we take an X-ray to see the tooth's roots and position — so there are no surprises during the procedure and we can plan the gentlest way to remove it.
For a simple extraction — a tooth that's fully visible above the gum — we numb the area with local anaesthesia, gently loosen the tooth and lift it out. You'll feel firm pressure and some movement, but not the sharp pain people often expect; the anaesthetic takes care of that.
A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gum line, hasn't fully erupted, or is impacted in the bone — impacted wisdom teeth are the common example. Our oral surgeon makes a small opening in the gum, sometimes removes a little bone or divides the tooth into sections, and closes the area with stitches that aid healing. It takes a little longer and needs more aftercare, but it's a procedure we carry out routinely.

Recovery, aftercare and avoiding dry socket
Healing after a tooth removal is usually quicker than people fear. After a simple extraction most patients are comfortable within about three to seven days; a surgical extraction takes a little longer. Individual recovery varies based on the tooth, the type of extraction and how closely the aftercare is followed.
The first 24 hours — protect the clot
The priority is protecting the blood clot that forms in the socket, because that clot is what lets the area heal. That means:
- Bite gently on the gauze we give you until any bleeding settles.
- Stick to soft, lukewarm foods — curd rice, idli, soups, smoothies — and skip the straw.
- Avoid forceful spitting, smoking and hot drinks for the first day.
- Take any prescribed medication as directed and keep the rest of your mouth clean.

For most teeth, removal isn't the end of the plan — it's the first step toward restoring the gap so your bite and appearance stay intact. Depending on the tooth and your priorities, that's usually a dental implant — the closest option we have to a natural tooth — or a bridge.
A few teeth, such as some wisdom teeth, don't need replacing at all. We'll tell you honestly which applies to you, and there's no pressure to decide on the day of the extraction.

A badly broken back tooth needed a surgical extraction. The X-ray, the plan and the cost were explained before we started, and the whole thing was calmer than I feared.
Simple extraction and it was over in about half an hour. Clear aftercare instructions, and the socket healed in a few days with no dry socket. Being open on Sunday helped.
They removed the tooth and planned the implant to replace it in the same visit. One team, one plan — I wasn't sent to another clinic for the replacement.
