Dentist-planned · not a salon treatment
A professional teeth whitening session at Arasu Dental Care typically lightens your teeth by three to five shades — enough for the change to show in photographs, not just in the mirror. It's the right choice when your teeth are healthy but stained: by tea, coffee, or tobacco, or by the gradual yellowing that comes with age. And because every whitening treatment here is planned by a dentist — not a salon technician — we examine your gums and enamel first, match the method to the type of stain you actually have, and tell you honestly when whitening won't get you the result you want and a professional cleaning or veneers would serve you better. Results vary with the type and depth of staining — which is exactly why we start with an assessment, at R.S. Puram or Saibaba Colony, any day of the week.

Where To Start
Teeth whitening — also called tooth bleaching — works on natural tooth enamel. Whether it will work well for you depends almost entirely on what caused the discolouration.
Surface stains from tea, coffee, wine and tobacco, and the yellow tone that develops with age. Yellowish discolouration is the case whitening was designed for.
Greyish discolouration and staining from childhood antibiotics (tetracycline) sit deeper in the tooth; they may need repeated sessions — and in some cases veneers give a far better result than whitening ever will. If that's your case, we'll say so at the consultation rather than sell you sessions that under-deliver.
Bleaching gel only changes natural enamel, so existing dental work keeps its original shade. If you have a crown on a front tooth, we plan around it — otherwise you end up with one tooth a different colour from the rest.
The Options
We offer every clinically proven route to a brighter smile, and we'll recommend the one that fits your stain type, your timeline and your budget — not the most expensive one on the menu.
Our dentists apply a professional-strength whitening gel — in-office gels typically use 25–40% hydrogen peroxide, several times stronger than anything sold over the counter — with your gums shielded behind a protective barrier, then activate it under an LED light in timed cycles. The whole visit takes about 60–90 minutes and the difference is visible the same day, which is why this is the option we recommend before weddings, interviews and photoshoots.
We take impressions of your teeth and make trays that fit your mouth precisely, then supply a milder professional gel you wear for a set time each day over one to two weeks. The change is gradual and you control the final shade. Clinical reviews also suggest dentist-supervised at-home whitening holds its result well — in several comparative studies, patients using supervised tray systems needed re-whitening less often than in-office-only patients.
For heavier discolouration we often start with an in-clinic session and follow it with a short take-home course — the in-office visit does the heavy lifting, the trays push the shade further and stabilise it.
If one tooth has darkened after a root canal treatment, surface whitening won't fix it — the discolouration comes from inside. Our endodontist places the whitening agent inside the tooth instead, a procedure most patients don't know exists. It's assessed separately at your consultation.
| Option | Time to result | Typical change | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-clinic LED whitening | Single 60–90 min visit | 3–5 shades, visible same day | Deadlines — weddings, events, interviews |
| Take-home custom trays | 1–2 weeks of daily wear | Gradual; you control the end shade | Steady results, sensitive teeth, budget |
| Combined (clinic + trays) | 1 visit + 1–2 weeks | Maximum achievable brightening | Heavy or long-standing staining |
| Internal bleaching | 1–2 visits | Single tooth matched to neighbours | A dark tooth after root canal treatment |
| Chemist strips / gels | 2–4 weeks | 1–4 shades on mild stains | Very mild staining; no dentist supervision |
The Process
We check your teeth and gums, photograph your starting shade against a shade guide, and confirm whitening is the right treatment for your type of staining.
Whitening gel can't work through plaque or tartar, so we polish the surface first — this alone often brightens the smile noticeably.
A protective barrier is placed along your gumline and a retractor keeps your cheeks and lips clear of the gel throughout.
The whitening gel goes on in three to four rounds of 15–20 minutes each, activated under the LED light, with the dentist monitoring your comfort between rounds.
We rinse off the gel, compare your new shade against the starting record so you see the difference for yourself, and finish with a desensitising application.

Straight Answers
A straight answer matters more here than a reassuring one — because whitening has real limits, and knowing them up front is how your expectations and your result end up matching.
Some patients feel a short-lived sensitivity to cold during or after treatment; it typically settles within a couple of days. We reduce it with a desensitising gel after every session, and if your teeth are already sensitive, tell us — we can pre-treat and choose a gentler protocol. Dental research consistently shows that well-chosen lower gel concentrations can produce comparable whitening with noticeably less sensitivity, and we'd rather adjust the protocol than have you uncomfortable.
Professionally whitened teeth generally stay brighter for anywhere from six months to about two years — where you land in that range depends mostly on tea, coffee and tobacco habits. Top-up sessions or a take-home tray refill extend the result.
Crowns, veneers and visible fillings keep their shade. If they'll stand out after whitening, we'll plan replacements into the discussion up front — not surprise you afterwards.
Enamel can only get so light; whitening brightens your natural shade, it doesn't produce a uniform paper-white. If the shade you're picturing is beyond that limit, the honest route is veneers or smile designing — and we'll show you both options side by side rather than over-promise on bleaching.

Making It Last
Plan on six months to two years of visibly brighter teeth, with your habits deciding which end of that range you get. Heavy tea, coffee or tobacco use pulls the shade back faster; rinsing after coffee, drinking staining drinks through a straw, and a professional cleaning and polish every six months stretch the result considerably. Many of our patients simply book a short top-up session once a year — far cheaper than starting over — or keep their custom trays for occasional home maintenance.

Why Arasu
Whitening is the one dental treatment now sold everywhere from salons to online kits — and the one where dentist supervision most visibly changes the outcome. At Arasu Dental Care, whitening sits inside a full cosmetic dentistry practice: your treatment is planned after a proper examination, performed with medical-grade materials and gum protection, and overseen by a team that includes Dr. L.S. Priyanka — an award-winning conservative dentistry specialist with extensive smile-design experience.
We examine your gums and enamel and match the method to your stain type before anything begins — because whitening the wrong discolouration just wastes your money.
Professional-strength gel and a gum barrier every session — the two things unsupervised strips and salon kits can't give you.
Dr. L.S. Priyanka's conservative-dentistry background means we know how to get the most out of bleaching — and when bleaching is the wrong tool and veneers or a cleaning will serve you better. You'll get that answer straight, either way.
R.S. Puram and Saibaba Colony are open 10 AM – 8:30 PM, all seven days — so a whitening visit fits around work, not the other way round.
Patient Reviews
Had the in-clinic LED session before my sister's wedding. Three shades brighter the same day and they showed me the before/after against the shade guide. Gums were protected the whole time — very comfortable.
Years of coffee and tobacco staining. They were honest that I'd need a combined clinic-plus-tray plan and it worked. No overselling, and the quote covered everything up front.
My teeth are sensitive so I was nervous. They pre-treated and used a gentler gel, and applied a desensitising gel after. Mild cold sensitivity for a day, then fine.
One dark front tooth after an old root canal. They explained internal bleaching — something no other clinic had mentioned — and matched it to the rest. Really impressed.
FAQs
Yes — professional whitening performed by a dentist doesn't harm enamel or tooth structure. The gel oxidises the stain compounds inside the enamel rather than stripping the surface, and your gums are shielded throughout. The safety concerns you may have read about apply mainly to unsupervised use of strong gels and to abrasive home remedies, not to dentist-performed whitening.
Most patients see a three to five shade improvement with professional whitening. If your teeth are already fairly light, the change will be smaller — enamel has a natural brightness limit — and if your staining is greyish or antibiotic-related, we may recommend veneers instead. We photograph your starting shade so you can see the actual difference, not guess at it.
The procedure itself is comfortable — there's no drilling and no anaesthesia needed. Some patients notice temporary sensitivity to cold afterwards, which typically settles within a day or two; we apply a desensitising gel after every session and can pre-treat sensitive teeth before we begin.
Generally six months to two years, depending on your tea, coffee and tobacco habits. Regular cleanings and an occasional top-up session keep the shade up over the long term.
At Arasu Dental Care, take-home kits start from ₹2,000, an in-clinic whitening session runs ₹5,000–₹10,000, and laser/LED whitening is ₹15,000–₹20,000. Your exact figure is confirmed at consultation once we've assessed your staining — and the quote covers the complete protocol, with nothing added later. See our treatment cost page for the wider picture.
Yes — but from the inside. A root-canal-treated tooth darkens internally, so our endodontist places the whitening agent inside the tooth (internal bleaching) rather than on the surface. It's a different procedure from standard whitening and is assessed separately.
No. Bleaching only lightens natural enamel — crowns, veneers and fillings keep their original shade. If you have visible dental work, we factor it into the plan from the start, which sometimes means replacing a restoration after whitening so everything matches.
No — and they can do lasting harm. The acid in lemon and the abrasiveness of baking soda and charcoal wear away enamel, which exposes the yellower dentine underneath and makes teeth look darker over time. If cost is the concern, our take-home tray kit is the safe, supervised alternative in the same price bracket.
