Stain type first — then the treatment that actually works
If your teeth have turned yellow, brown, grey or picked up dull patches that no longer lift with brushing, the fix depends entirely on what kind of stain it is — and that is the first thing we sort out at Arasu Dental Care. Surface stains from coffee, tea and tobacco usually clear with a cleaning or whitening; stains that sit inside the tooth — from old injuries, root-canal-treated teeth, certain antibiotics or fluorosis — need a different approach.
We look at your teeth, tell you which type you have, and match it to the treatment that will actually work for you — rather than selling you the same procedure regardless of cause.

Teeth discolouration treatment in Coimbatore
Dentists sort tooth discolouration into two groups, and the group you fall into decides your treatment. When you come in, this is the assessment we make first — because a stain on the surface and a stain from within the tooth look similar to you but respond to completely different treatments.

These sit on the outer enamel and come from things that touch your teeth every day — coffee, tea, red wine, colas, coloured foods, and especially tobacco and paan/betel. Surface stains are the most common reason people come to us unhappy with their smile, and they are also the most straightforward to treat — usually with a professional cleaning or whitening.

These come from within the tooth structure and cannot be brushed or polished away. They need whitening that reaches deeper, or a treatment that covers the tooth — and getting this diagnosis right matters, because whitening a stain that whitening cannot fix wastes your time and money.
Tobacco is the heaviest stainer. In an Indian study of 586 adults in Udaipur, smokers had roughly three times the extrinsic staining of non-smokers, and tobacco chewers around twice — with tea and coffee adding to it.
More than cosmetic?
Most discolouration is cosmetic — it affects how your teeth look, not your health — and shop-bought strips or whitening toothpaste can lighten mild surface staining a little. But some discolouration is a signal worth acting on, and some simply will not respond to anything you can buy over the counter. It is worth booking an assessment with us when:
There is a real reason not to leave it: a UK national study found 28% of smokers reported moderate-to-severe tooth discolouration compared with 15% of non-smokers — and dissatisfaction with tooth colour is one of the most common reasons people hold back their smile. You do not have to live with that, and you do not need to guess which fix you need. That is what the consultation is for.
Stained teeth treatment in Coimbatore
There is no single treatment for stained teeth — there is the right treatment for your stain. Once we know whether your discolouration is on the surface or inside the tooth, we work up a ladder from the simplest, most tooth-preserving option to more involved ones, and we only move up if the level below will not get you the result. Here is how that ladder usually runs.
Surface stains held in plaque and tartar
For many people, what looks like staining is actually hardened plaque and tartar holding pigment against the teeth. A scaling and polishing removes that build-up and the surface stains locked into it, and it is often the first step before any whitening — sometimes it is all you need to see a clearly brighter, cleaner smile.
Healthy teeth dulled by diet, tea, coffee or tobacco
When the tooth is healthy but the colour is dulled by years of diet, tea, coffee or tobacco, professional teeth whitening lifts the shade several steps beyond what toothpaste can reach. We offer in-clinic whitening for a faster change and dentist-supervised take-home kits for a gradual one. Whitening works best on surface (extrinsic) staining; we will tell you honestly how much lift to expect for your teeth rather than promise a fixed shade.
A tooth darkened after a root canal or an old injury
A tooth that has darkened after a root canal or an old injury will not lighten from the outside, because the stain is inside it. For these, we can bleach the tooth from within — placing the whitening agent inside the treated tooth so a single grey tooth is brought back closer to its neighbours, without cutting it down for a crown or veneer where that can be avoided.
Tetracycline banding, marked fluorosis, non-responsive internal stains
Some discolouration simply will not whiten — deep tetracycline banding, marked fluorosis, or a tooth stained from within that does not respond to bleaching. Here we cover the tooth rather than lighten it. Dental veneers — thin custom shells bonded to the front of the teeth (you may hear them called laminates) — mask stubborn stains and give an even colour, while composite bonding can be a lower-cost option for one or two teeth. These change how the tooth looks permanently, so we reserve them for stains the gentler options genuinely cannot fix.
Decay, a failing filling or gum disease behind the colour
If the discolouration is coming from decay, an old failing filling or gum disease, cosmetic treatment on top of it would only hide the problem. In those cases we treat the underlying issue first — a filling, gum treatment, or care for the affected tooth — and then look at colour. It is the honest order to work in, and it protects the tooth long term.

Yellow teeth & stain removal cost
Because "stained teeth" covers everything from a quick clean to veneers, the cost depends on which treatment your stain actually needs. The ranges below reflect our fees at both Coimbatore branches. The final figure is confirmed only after we have seen your teeth and agreed the plan with you — there are no hidden add-ons sprung on you later.
| Treatment | Typical cost (Arasu) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Scaling & polishing | ₹1,500 – ₹3,000 | Surface stains held in plaque/tartar |
| Take-home whitening kit | ₹2,000 – ₹6,000 | Mild surface staining, gradual lift |
| In-clinic whitening | ₹5,000 – ₹10,000 | Diet / tea / coffee / tobacco staining |
| Laser / LED whitening | ₹15,000 – ₹20,000 | Faster, deeper surface-stain lift |
| Composite veneers (per tooth) | ₹3,000 – ₹8,000 | One or two stained front teeth |
| Porcelain veneers (per tooth) | ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 | Stubborn stains whitening can't fix |
What changes the price: the type and depth of your stain (surface vs internal), how many teeth are involved, whether a cleaning is needed first, and the whitening or veneer material chosen. Internal bleaching for a single dark tooth is quoted per tooth after assessment. Payment: we accept UPI, cash, cards and net banking, with EMI / no-cost EMI available on higher-value cosmetic plans — ask us at your visit.

Book a consultationWhy Arasu
Getting stained teeth right is a diagnosis problem before it is a cosmetic one — the wrong call means whitening a tooth that needed a veneer, or covering a tooth that only needed a clean.
Our cosmetic and stain cases are led by Dr. L.S. Priyanka, working in conservative, tooth-preserving dentistry — the approach that is specifically about restoring a tooth's look while removing the least tooth structure possible.
Because we are a multispecialty clinic, the full range of answers is in-house — a hygienist's cleaning, whitening, internal bleaching from our endodontic side, or veneers — so you are matched to the right treatment rather than the only one a clinic happens to offer.
Both branches are open all seven days, 10 AM to 8:30 PM, which makes it easy to fit whitening or a cosmetic plan around work.

FAQs
Brushing removes fresh plaque, but it can't lift stains that have built into hardened tartar or worked into the enamel from years of tea, coffee or tobacco — and it can't change the natural yellowing that shows as enamel thins with age. A professional cleaning clears what brushing can't, and whitening lifts the shade beyond that. If your teeth are yellow despite good habits, it usually means the staining is beyond what home care reaches, not that you're doing anything wrong.
No — and that's the honest answer that matters most. Whitening works well on surface stains from diet, tea, coffee and tobacco. It works less on deep internal stains — tetracycline banding, fluorosis, or a tooth darkened from inside — which may lighten only partly or not at all. For those, veneers or bonding give a more reliable result. We tell you which group your teeth fall into before you commit to anything.
A single dark tooth usually means the nerve inside has been damaged — often from an old knock or injury, or after a root canal — and the discolouration is coming from within the tooth. It won't lighten from outside whitening. We can often bleach it internally, or cover it if needed. It's worth getting checked, because a darkening tooth can also signal a problem that needs treating, not just cosmetic attention.
Professional whitening done under a dentist's supervision is well established and safe for most people. The most common effect is short-lived sensitivity to hot and cold, which usually settles within a day or two. We assess your teeth and gums first, protect the soft tissue during treatment, and adjust the strength if you're prone to sensitivity — which is safer than unsupervised strong products bought online.
It varies with your habits. Teeth pick up new stains over time, so smokers and heavy coffee, tea or red-wine drinkers will see colour return sooner. Most people keep their result looking fresh with a cleaning every six months and an occasional top-up. Whitening isn't a one-time permanent change — it's a result you maintain, and we'll show you how.
It depends on the stain. If it's surface build-up, a scaling and polishing (₹1,500–₹3,000) is often the most cost-effective first step and sometimes all you need. Take-home whitening kits start around ₹2,000. We'll always start with the simplest option that will actually work for your teeth rather than pushing you toward the most expensive one.
Whitening is the first choice when your teeth are healthy and the staining is on the surface — it's simpler, cheaper and keeps your natural teeth untouched. Veneers come in when stains won't whiten, or when there are chips and shape issues alongside the discolouration. At your consultation we'll tell you honestly which one your case needs, and why.
