Jaw pain — cause found first, then treated
Jaw pain rarely stays put. It creeps into your mornings as a stiff, aching jaw, turns meals into careful negotiations, and often drags headaches and ear discomfort along with it. At Arasu Dental Care, we treat jaw pain by first pinning down where it is actually coming from — the joint, the muscles, a grinding habit, a troublesome wisdom tooth, or a bite that doesn’t meet properly — and then fixing that cause, not just quieting the symptom.
This is a problem we see daily, and one our clinic is unusually well set up for: our founder, Dr. P.S. Sree Cumar, is an orthodontist and TMJ pain specialist — named Dentist of the Year (South Region) at the 2023 Economic Times Healthcare Awards — and jaw pain sits at the centre of his practice. If your jaw hurts, clicks, locks or tires easily, this page will help you work out what’s likely going on and what we’d do about it.

Find your pattern
Jaw pain is a symptom with several possible sources, and the right treatment depends entirely on which one is yours. A Chennai population study published in the Journal of Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology found that over half of adults examined (53.7%) showed at least one sign of a jaw joint problem — most commonly clicking or deviation when opening — so if some of the patterns below feel familiar, you’re in very common company. Here’s how the causes typically separate:
| If your jaw pain looks like this… | The likely cause | How we treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Pain near the ear, clicking or popping when you open, morning stiffness, a jaw that occasionally catches or locks | Jaw joint (TMJ) disorder — the most common source of persistent jaw pain | Conservative TMJ care — splints, bite assessment, muscle therapy. See our TMJ & jaw pain treatment page for the full picture. |
| Jaw ache that’s worst on waking, flattened or sensitive teeth, tension headaches, a partner who hears grinding at night | Night-time grinding or clenching (bruxism) — around 1 in 5 adults grind, most without knowing | A custom night guard to protect the teeth and rest the joint, alongside TMJ care where the joint is already irritated. |
| Pain at the very back of the jaw, often one-sided, with a swollen or tender gum behind the last molar | An erupting or impacted wisdom tooth pressing on the jaw and neighbouring teeth | Wisdom tooth removal by our oral surgeon, after an X-ray confirms the tooth’s position. |
| Pain or tiredness when chewing, uneven tooth wear, teeth that don’t meet evenly, a jaw that feels ‘off-centre’ | A bite (occlusion) or jaw alignment problem loading the joint and muscles unevenly | Orthodontic correction — braces or jaw and face correction, planned by our orthodontist. |
| Jaw-area pain with ear discharge, blocked sinuses, facial numbness, or pain that follows a cold | Often not dental at all — ear, sinus or nerve conditions can mimic jaw pain | We’ll tell you plainly if the cause isn’t dental and point you to the right doctor, rather than treating a jaw that isn’t the problem. |
Most people arrive with a blend — a grinding habit that has irritated the joint, or a bite issue that has overworked the muscles. That’s normal, and it’s exactly why we diagnose before we treat.
The first visit
Your first visit is a diagnostic one. We examine the jaw joint and muscles, watch how your jaw opens and tracks, check the bite contact points, and look for the tooth-wear signature that grinding leaves behind. Where the joint or tooth roots need a closer look, we image them in-house — a jaw X-ray (OPG) for the overall picture, or a CBCT scan when we need three-dimensional detail of the joint or an impacted tooth.
Depending on what we find, your case is handled by Dr. P.S. Sree Cumar (orthodontics, TMJ and bite-related pain), (periodontist with a focus on jaw-pain and laser-assisted care), or Dr. P.R. Gouthaman (oral and maxillofacial surgeon, for wisdom teeth and surgical assessment) — all under one roof, so you aren’t referred around the city to get an answer.
What we do about it
Almost all jaw pain is treated conservatively — without surgery. A 2026 comparative study of treated TMJ-disorder patients found conservative care resolved symptoms in more than 8 in 10 cases (84.3% overall), with custom occlusal splints the strongest performer (95.5% recovery in that study, against 65.4% for physiotherapy alone). Our treatment ladder follows the same logic:
Rest and habit correction first — soft-food periods, breaking clenching habits, and muscle care, often enough on their own for recent, mild pain.
A custom splint or night guard where the joint needs unloading or grinding is driving the pain — made to your bite, not a pharmacy one-size tray.
Bite or alignment correction where an uneven bite is the underlying driver — orthodontic treatment resolves the cause rather than managing the symptom.
Tooth-level treatment where a wisdom tooth or infected tooth is the source — removal or treatment of that tooth typically settles the jaw within days to weeks.
Surgical assessment, rarely — only a small minority of jaw-joint cases ever need a surgical opinion, and our oral surgeon assesses these in-house before anything is decided.
How long it takes depends on the cause: wisdom-tooth pain settles quickly once treated, while joint and muscle pain usually improves over weeks of splint wear and review. Results vary from person to person — which is exactly why we re-examine rather than assume. For the full treatment ladder, splint types, and what a TMJ care plan involves, see our TMJ and jaw pain treatment page.
Because jaw pain sits between specialities, it’s easy to be bounced between clinics. At Arasu it isn’t: your case is led by Dr. P.S. Sree Cumar, MDS — an orthodontist and TMJ / orofacial-pain specialist named Dentist of the Year (South Region) at the 2023 ET Healthcare Awards — with a periodontist and an oral surgeon on hand under the same roof when the cause is a gum, a joint or a wisdom tooth.

While you decide
These home steps ease symptoms — they don’t fix causes. Persistent jaw pain rarely resolves by being ignored, and the earlier a joint or bite problem is treated, the simpler the treatment tends to be.
Transparent pricing
The honest answer is that it depends on the cause, because the treatments differ so much — a night guard and a wisdom-tooth removal are priced very differently. What we can be transparent about up front is the diagnostic step, which is the same for everyone:
| Diagnostic step | Fee at Arasu Dental Care |
|---|---|
| Consultation and jaw examination | ₹300 – ₹500 |
| IOPA (single-tooth X-ray, if a tooth is suspected) | ₹200 – ₹300 |
| OPG (full-jaw X-ray) | ₹400 – ₹600 |
| CBCT scan (3D imaging, complex joint or impacted-tooth cases) | ₹1,000 – ₹4,000 |
| Treatment (quoted after diagnosis) | Fee |
|---|---|
| Custom splint / night guard | Quoted after diagnosis |
| TMJ treatment plan (splint + reviews) | Quoted after diagnosis |
| Simple tooth extraction (e.g. erupted wisdom tooth) | ₹1,500 – ₹3,500 |
| Surgical extraction (impacted wisdom tooth) | ₹4,000 – ₹8,000 |
| Orthodontic bite correction (where indicated) | Metal braces ₹30,000 – ₹50,000Other options quoted per case |
Treatment costs are confirmed after your diagnosis, in writing, before anything begins — with no obligation to proceed. Prices are subject to individual consultation, and we accept cash, UPI, cards and EMI options. If your jaw pain turns out to need only reassurance and home care, we’ll tell you that too.

FAQs
Clicking usually means the small cushioning disc inside the jaw joint is slipping out of position and snapping back as you open. An occasional click without any pain often needs nothing more than monitoring. Clicking with pain, stiffness or catching is different — that’s an irritated joint asking for treatment, and the earlier it’s assessed, the simpler jaw clicking treatment tends to be.
Start with a dentist — ideally one with orthodontic or TMJ training, because the bite and the joint are involved in most cases. If our examination points to an ear, sinus or nerve cause instead, we’ll say so and direct you to the right physician. What you shouldn’t do is guess between specialists while the pain settles in.
Mild, recent jaw pain from a strained muscle or a tense week often does, especially with rest and soft foods. Pain that keeps returning, lasts beyond two weeks, or comes with clicking, locking or worn teeth usually has a structural cause — a joint, bite or tooth problem — and that pattern tends to persist until the cause is treated.
No — and this is why we diagnose before treating. The jaw joint is the most common source, but grinding habits, wisdom teeth, bite problems and even ear or sinus conditions produce very similar pain. Treating the wrong cause wastes your time and money, so the first visit is about locating the source precisely.
The diagnostic visit is modest and fixed — consultation ₹300–₹500, with a jaw X-ray at ₹400–₹600 if needed. Treatment cost depends entirely on the cause: a wisdom-tooth removal, a custom night guard and orthodontic bite correction sit at very different price points. We quote in writing after diagnosis, before anything begins.
Very unlikely. The large majority of jaw pain — including confirmed joint disorders — responds to conservative care such as splints, habit correction and bite treatment; research puts conservative recovery above 8 in 10 treated cases. Surgery is reserved for the small minority with structural joint damage, and our oral surgeon assesses those cases in-house before any decision.
This page is for general information and does not replace a clinical examination. Individual results vary depending on the cause of your jaw pain and how consistently treatment is followed. Consult our dentists for a personalised assessment.
