Forward-teeth & buck-teeth correction by an MDS orthodontist

Protruding Teeth (Buck Teeth) Treatment in Coimbatore

At Arasu Dental Care, we bring forward-placed upper front teeth back into line so your lips close naturally, your bite meets correctly, and your front teeth are far less exposed to knocks and chipping. Most cases of protruding or buck teeth are corrected with braces or clear aligners — no surgery, no replacing teeth.

Which one suits you, and how long it takes, depends on why your teeth sit forward in the first place — and that's the first thing our orthodontist works out at your consultation. Your treatment is led by Dr. P.S. Sree Cumar, MDS (Orthodontics), our founder and an orthodontist named Dentist of the Year – South Region at the 2023 Economic Times Healthcare Awards. Correcting protruded front teeth is core orthodontic work we do routinely, with braces or clear aligners, for teenagers and adults alike.

Know your problem

Do you actually have protruding teeth? Here's how to tell

Protruding teeth — what most people call buck teeth, and what dentists call increased overjet — is when your upper front teeth angle or sit too far forward of the lower teeth. It is one of the most common bite problems we treat: in Indian population studies, Class II Division 1 malocclusion (the technical name for prominent, forward upper front teeth) is reported in roughly 15–23% of people, making it the most common bite problem after simple crowding.

You'll usually recognise it as one or more of these

  • Upper front teeth that visibly jut forward, so they show even when your mouth is relaxed.
  • Lips that don't meet comfortably at rest — you have to make an effort to close them.
  • A gap between the upper and lower front teeth when you bite — your front teeth don't touch.
  • Front teeth that have already been chipped or knocked, because they take the first hit in any fall or blow.
  • Feeling self-conscious about your side profile in photos.

If that sounds like you, this is treatable — and in most cases straightforwardly so. If your concern is really that your front teeth overlap too far down over the lowers (a deep bite) rather than forward, that is a different problem we treat differently, and we'll tell you which one you have at the consultation.

Cause decides the treatment

Why your teeth stick out decides how we fix them

This is the part that matters most, because it changes your whole treatment plan. Protruding front teeth come from one of two causes, and telling them apart is the first thing our orthodontist does.

The majority of cases

Dental protrusion

Your jaws are in proportion, but the upper front teeth have tipped or drifted forward — often from habits or crowding pushing them out.

What that means for you: fully correctable by moving teeth with braces or aligners. No surgery.

A smaller group

Skeletal protrusion

The upper jaw sits forward, or the lower jaw is set back, so the teeth follow the jaw. The teeth themselves may be fine.

What that means for you: in a growing child, the jaw can be guided with functional appliances. A severe skeletal case in an adult may need jaw correction alongside orthodontics.

Most protruding-teeth cases we see are dental, or a mix of the two, and respond well to braces or clear aligners alone. Guiding jaw growth in children is one of Dr. Sree Cumar's named areas of expertise, which is why an early check matters — the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic assessment by age 7, while the jaw is still growing and a forward bite is far easier to steer. A severe skeletal pattern in an adult is the one situation where teeth-only treatment won't fully change the profile; in those cases we discuss jaw correction honestly rather than promise braces alone will do it.

Common causes behind a dental protrusion include prolonged thumb-sucking or dummy use in childhood, a tongue-thrust swallowing habit, mouth-breathing, and crowding that has forced the front teeth outward. We look for the driver, because an untreated habit is a common reason teeth drift forward again after treatment. Where a child still has a habit, our pediatric team handles early habit-breaking and growth guidance.

How we correct protruding teeth at Arasu Dental Care

Almost every case starts the same way: we take photographs, a bite analysis and X-rays so we can see whether your protrusion is dental, skeletal or both. Only then do we recommend a plan — quoting you before we've looked properly is how patients end up with treatment that relapses. From there, the two mainstays are:

Braces - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Braces

The widest range of cases, including more pronounced protrusion

Fixed braces are the most reliable way to pull forward-placed teeth back and close the bite, and they handle the widest range of cases — including more pronounced protrusion and cases where teeth also need rotating. Sometimes we create the room to move the front teeth back by other means; occasionally, in a crowded mouth, that means removing a tooth or two, which we'll always discuss with you first. See our full braces page for the ceramic, self-ligating and lingual options.

Clear aligners - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Clear aligners

Mild to moderate protrusion; adults and older teens

For mild to moderate protrusion, clear aligners move the teeth back gradually with a series of near-invisible trays you can take out to eat and clean. They suit adults and older teenagers who'd rather not wear visible braces. Not every protrusion case is an aligner case — the more the teeth need to move, the more likely braces are the better tool — and we'll tell you plainly which camp you're in. Full detail is on our clear aligners page.

Growth guidance - Arasu Dental Care, Coimbatore

Guiding a child's growing jaw

Growing children, while the jaw is still forming

When we see a child early, we can often use the growth that's still ahead of them — a functional appliance encourages the lower jaw forward or restrains the upper, so the teeth end up meeting correctly without heavier treatment later. This window doesn't stay open, which is the practical reason an early check is worth it. Our pediatric dentistry team handles this stage.

12–24 mo

How long treatment takes depends on the case, but most protrusion corrections run about 12 to 24 months, followed by retainers to hold the result. Whichever route fits you, the everyday work — fitting the appliance, adjusting it, and keeping the plan on track — is what our orthodontic team does day in, day out.

Before you commit

Honest things to weigh before you start

Straightening protruding teeth is worth doing for more than looks, and it's fair to know the real trade-offs before you commit.

Five things we'll be straight with you about

  • It's genuinely protective, not just cosmetic. Teeth that stick out get hit first. Research consistently shows children with increased overjet run around double the risk of injury to their front teeth, and one large review found children with malocclusion had a 64% higher chance of dental trauma — with protruding front teeth the specific type most linked to it. Bringing the teeth back lowers that exposure.
  • Results hold only if you wear retainers. Teeth have a memory and drift back toward where they started. After treatment you'll wear retainers — this isn't optional, and it's the single biggest factor in whether your result lasts.
  • The cause has to be addressed too. If a thumb-sucking or tongue-thrust habit pushed the teeth forward and it isn't tackled, the protrusion can return. We build that into the plan.
  • A severe skeletal case has limits. If the protrusion is coming from the jaw position rather than the teeth, braces or aligners alone won't fully change your profile. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have you expect a result orthodontics can't deliver on its own.
  • It works at any age. Adults straighten protruding teeth successfully all the time — healthy teeth move whatever your age. Treatment in adults can simply take a little longer because there's no growth to work with.

FAQs

Protruding teeth: your questions answered

In most cases, yes. The majority of protruding-teeth cases are dental, or a mix of dental and mild skeletal, and are corrected with braces or clear aligners — no surgery. Surgery only enters the picture for a severe skeletal case in an adult, where the jaw position itself is the cause. We work out which category you're in before recommending anything.

No, and it's a useful difference to know. Buck teeth (protrusion / overjet) means the upper front teeth angle forward. An overbite means they overlap too far down over the lower teeth. They often occur together, and when they do we correct both in one course of treatment.

Most cases run about 12 to 24 months, followed by retainers. The exact time depends on how far the teeth need to move and whether you're treated with braces or aligners — we give you a realistic timeline after the consultation.

Adults are treated successfully all the time — healthy teeth move at any age. Children have one advantage: their jaw is still growing, so a forward bite can sometimes be guided with a functional appliance before it sets. In adults, treatment may take a little longer, but the result is just as achievable.

They can, if two things aren't handled: retainers and the original cause. Teeth naturally drift back toward where they started, so retainers hold the result, and if a habit like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrust caused the protrusion, we address that as part of the plan. Done properly, the correction lasts.

It depends on the appliance your case needs. Metal braces run ₹30,000–₹50,000, ceramic braces ₹35,000–₹70,000, and clear aligners ₹40,000–₹3,00,000 depending on complexity. A consultation is ₹300–₹500, after which we give you an itemised estimate for your specific case.

It improves your smile, but it's also protective. Teeth that stick out are hit first in any fall or knock — studies link increased overjet to roughly double the risk of front-tooth injury. Bringing the teeth back reduces that risk, and helps your lips close and your bite meet correctly.
