When it's the right call
Does your child actually need a crown?
Tooth decay in young children is far more common than most parents realise — research across India suggests roughly one in two children under six has early childhood caries, and studies in Tamil Nadu have reported figures around 56%. So if you're here because of a deep cavity, you're in very familiar territory — and it's fixable. We usually recommend a pediatric crown in these situations.
Decay covers too much of the tooth. When a cavity spreads across two or more surfaces of a baby molar, a filling has too little healthy tooth left to grip — it keeps breaking away. A crown wraps and protects the whole tooth.
Your child has had pulp treatment. After a pulpotomy or pulpectomy, the treated tooth becomes brittle. Research consistently shows pulp-treated baby molars protected with a crown last significantly better than those restored with a filling — so we place a crown as the standard final step.
The tooth is fractured or badly worn. A broken baby tooth, or enamel that formed weak (hypoplasia), often can't be rebuilt reliably with filling material alone.
Fillings keep failing. For children with high decay risk, a crown seals the entire tooth and stops the repeated repair cycle.

Why save a baby tooth at all?
It's a fair question — the tooth is going to fall out anyway. But baby molars aren't placeholders you can afford to lose early.
The second baby molar typically stays until your child is 10–12 years old. Lose it early and the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, the adult tooth underneath loses its guide, and your child often ends up needing a space maintainer now and longer orthodontic treatment later.
A crown that keeps the natural tooth in place until it's ready to go is almost always the simpler, less expensive path — protecting chewing, speech and jaw development through the years your child depends on those teeth most.

What types of crowns do we use for children?
Unlike adult crowns, children's crowns are preformed — manufactured in graded sizes and fitted to the tooth in the same visit, with no lab impressions and no second appointment. We use three types, chosen by which tooth is involved and what matters most to you.
Stainless steel crown (SSC)
For back baby molars. Extremely durable, fitted in a single visit, with decades of clinical evidence behind it and the most economical of the three. The only trade-off is a silver metallic look — rarely visible in most children's smiles.
Pediatric zirconia crown
For front teeth, or back teeth where appearance matters to you. Tooth-coloured, strong and natural-looking. It costs more, needs a little more tooth trimming, and has a less forgiving fit than an SSC.
Composite strip crown
For front baby teeth. A natural appearance with a conservative, tooth-preserving approach — less durable than zirconia and more technique-sensitive to place, so it suits front teeth rather than heavy chewing surfaces.

Stainless steel crowns are the standard of care for back teeth worldwide for a simple reason: they work. A 2023 pooled analysis found a 96% success rate for stainless steel crowns on primary molars over 12 months — significantly higher than large fillings on the same teeth — and in our experience a well-fitted SSC typically stays in place until the tooth exfoliates naturally.
What to expect
What happens during your child's appointment?
The whole treatment usually takes 30–45 minutes per tooth, completed in one visit. Here's the sequence, so you can prepare your child honestly.
STEP 1
We numb the tooth gently
Numbing gel first, then local anaesthesia — so your child feels pressure, not pain. For anxious children or several teeth, comfort and sedation options are available; our pediatric team will discuss what suits your child.
STEP 2
We remove the decay and shape the tooth
Only as much trimming as the chosen crown type needs — enough for the crown to seat and seal, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible.
STEP 3
We size and fit the preformed crown
We select the right size from the graded set, adjust the fit and your child's bite, and cement it in place. No impressions, no waiting for a lab, no second visit.
STEP 4
Your child eats normally the same day
We'll ask you to keep very sticky sweets away for a day or two while the cement fully sets — then it's business as usual.

What's worth knowing before you say yes
- The silver look is a real trade-off. On back molars an SSC is rarely visible when your child smiles, and we'd generally choose durability there. If the appearance bothers you or your child, zirconia is the tooth-coloured alternative — it simply costs more.
- The crown leaves with the tooth. A pediatric crown falls out naturally along with the baby tooth — that's by design. It protects the tooth for its natural lifespan and no longer.
- Sometimes a crown is the wrong call. A small, single-surface cavity is better served by a tooth-coloured filling, and a tooth months from falling out doesn't justify the cost. We'll always tell you which situation yours is.
- Metal allergy is rare but worth mentioning. SSCs contain nickel; if your child has a known nickel allergy, tell us — zirconia avoids the issue entirely.
- Results vary. Outcomes differ from child to child depending on the tooth, decay extent and habits — we'll give you a realistic picture for your child at the consultation, not a generic promise.
