Child Dental Checkup in Coimbatore

A child dental checkup at Arasu Dental Care is where we catch the small problems — an early cavity, a bite that's developing off-track, a tooth that isn't coming in as it should — while they're still easy and inexpensive to fix. It's the right visit for every child from their first tooth onward, whether this is their very first appointment or a routine six-month review. Our aim at each visit is simple: keep your child comfortable, keep you informed, and keep their teeth on track for the years ahead.

Where To Start

When should your child have a checkup?

For most children, a checkup every six months keeps things on track — but the single most useful visit is the earliest one. Guidance is consistent: a child's first dental visit should happen within six months of the first tooth appearing, and no later than their first birthday. Bring your child in if any of these fit.

Their first tooth has appeared, or they've turned one — even with no visible problem, this first visit sets the baseline.

It's been six months since their last visit, or you can't remember the last one.

White, brown or black spots on any tooth, or a tooth that looks chipped or worn.

Pain or sensitivity, avoiding chewing on one side, or bad breath that doesn't clear with brushing.

Adult teeth coming in crooked, crowded or behind the baby teeth, or baby teeth very late to fall out.

Still sucking a thumb or using a pacifier past age three, which can affect how the jaw and teeth develop.

If none of these apply, that's the ideal reason to come — a routine visit for a child with no complaints is exactly when prevention works well and costs least. Most early decay is silent: it doesn't hurt, and it isn't visible from the outside until it's advanced. In practice, most families in Coimbatore come much later — often only when there's already pain — and by then a small problem has usually become a bigger one.

What To Expect

What happens at a child's checkup with us

A checkup is an examination, not a treatment — we look, we measure, and we explain. Nothing invasive happens without talking it through with you first. A routine visit usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and follows four steps.

STEP 1

A gentle look — the examination

We settle your child in and check each tooth, the gums, the bite, and how the jaw is developing. For younger children we keep it unhurried and playful, so the chair feels familiar rather than frightening — looking for early decay, weakening enamel, gum irritation, and whether baby and adult teeth are arriving in the right order.

STEP 2

A cleaning and fluoride, where it helps

If there's plaque or tartar building up, we clean it away and polish the teeth. We then apply a fluoride treatment where it's useful — one of the most effective, lowest-cost ways to hold off cavities. Not every child needs it at every visit; we'll tell you when it genuinely adds value and when it doesn't.

STEP 3

X-rays — only when they change the picture

We take a small X-ray only when it will actually change what we can see or recommend — decay hiding between teeth, or an adult tooth we need to track below the gum. Many routine children's visits need no imaging at all. When we do take one, we use the lowest practical dose and explain why beforehand.

STEP 4

What we found, and what happens next

We show you what we saw and walk you through anything that needs attention — an early cavity to watch, a filling better done now, a habit worth addressing, or an early orthodontic sign to keep an eye on. You get the options, the likely cost, and what happens if you wait.

Any treatment your child needs can usually begin without a referral elsewhere. Our pediatric, orthodontic and general dentists all work under one roof — day-to-day children's care is handled by , and when a bite or jaw-growth concern needs a specialist's eye, our founder Dr. P.S. Sree Cumar (MDS), an orthodontist and senior lecturer, reviews it in the same clinic. One roof, one record, one plan.

Straight Answers

Why a routine checkup is worth it — and what it can't do

The honest case for regular children's checkups is about timing, not fear. We'd rather set expectations plainly than oversell a routine visit.

What a checkup does

  • Catches problems while they're silent. Most early decay doesn't hurt and isn't visible from outside until it's advanced — a checkup finds it before that point.
  • Keeps treatment small. Caught early, a weakening spot can often be strengthened with fluoride and better home care, and a small cavity needs only a simple filling instead of a pulp treatment, crown or removal later.

What it can't do

  • It doesn't prevent every cavity on its own. Brushing, diet, and cutting down on sugary drinks and snacks between visits do most of the work — and we'll coach you and your child on exactly that.
  • Baby teeth still matter. They hold the space for the adult teeth and guide them into place — which is why we treat decay in them rather than ignore it.
Results vary. What a checkup finds and what your child needs depends on their age, diet, home care and individual risk. We give every child a personalised assessment rather than a fixed plan.

Took my 3-year-old for her first checkup, dreading a meltdown. The dentist was so patient — showed her everything first, no rush. She actually wants to go back. They found nothing wrong and charged only the consultation.

VVignesh K.

They spotted early decay between my son's back teeth on a tiny X-ray that we'd never have seen. One small filling, done gently, and they explained exactly why the X-ray was needed first.

SSowmya R.

Honest advice. My daughter's front teeth looked crooked and I was worried — they said it was normal for her age and just needed watching, no treatment yet. No upselling at all.

AArun M.

Booked a Sunday-evening slot for both kids after school stopped — impossible at most clinics. Both seen in one visit, everything shown to us on screen. Calm and quick.

FAQs

Child dental checkup — common questions from parents

Within six months of their first tooth appearing, and no later than their first birthday. This first visit is mostly about building familiarity, checking development, and giving you home-care guidance — the earlier a child gets comfortable with the chair, the easier every visit after is.

Every six months for most children. If your child has had cavities before, wears braces, or is at higher risk, we may suggest every three to four months and explain why. We set the interval to your child, not a fixed rule.

No — the examination is just looking, measuring and, if needed, a gentle cleaning. If we find something that needs treatment, that's planned separately and done comfortably under appropriate anaesthesia where required. We never rush a nervous child.

Only when an X-ray will actually change what we can see or recommend — decay between teeth, or an adult tooth developing below the gum. Many routine children's visits need no imaging at all, and when we do take one we use the lowest practical dose.

Because baby teeth hold the space and guide the adult teeth into position. Decay in a baby tooth can cause pain, infection, and crowding or crooked adult teeth later — so treating it protects the adult teeth coming through, not just the current ones.

The consultation and examination is ₹300–₹500. Cleaning and polishing, fluoride, a filling or an X-ray are priced separately and only added if your child needs them — we confirm every figure with you before starting.

Yes. We see anxious children regularly and use gentle, unhurried communication, distraction and positive reinforcement to build trust. Starting young, with simple no-treatment checkups, is one of the most reliable ways to stop dental fear from taking hold.
