The reversible stage — caught early
At Arasu Dental Care, gingivitis is the one stage of gum disease we can still fully reverse — which is exactly why it’s worth acting on now. If your gums bleed when you brush, look red or puffy, or feel tender along the gumline, that’s early inflammation, not damage that has set in yet. Treated at this stage, your gums can go back to being firm, pink and healthy, usually with a professional cleaning and a few changes at home.
Left alone, the same inflammation is what quietly progresses into periodontitis — the advanced form that damages the bone around your teeth and can’t be undone. Catching it now is the difference between a reversible problem and a lifelong one. Either way, you leave our R.S. Puram or Saibaba Colony branch knowing exactly where your gums stand.
Bleeding or swollen gums that won’t settle? Let’s take a look before it progresses. Both Coimbatore branches are open all seven days — call R.S. Puram +91 88380 22157 or Saibaba Colony +91 74491 88777.

Read the signs
You’re not unusual if you have it. A systematic review of studies across India found gingivitis in close to 47% of adults — and bleeding gums in nearly 7 in 10 people — so it’s one of the most common reasons people come to see us. The good news is that it’s also one of the most straightforward to put right. Gingivitis is easy to miss because it rarely hurts; it shows itself in small ways long before it becomes painful, which is precisely why so many people leave it. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having your gums checked:
What tells us it’s still gingivitis and not something more serious is what we don’t find: no loose teeth, no gum recession with exposed roots, and no bone loss on examination. Those are signs the disease has moved into periodontitis, which is treated differently. Part of what your first visit does is tell you honestly which side of that line you’re on.
Why timing matters
Gingivitis is reversible; the stage after it isn’t. Bacterial plaque irritates the gum, the gum inflames, and if the plaque is removed the inflammation settles and the gum heals. But when plaque is left long enough to harden into tartar and work below the gumline, the body’s response starts breaking down the bone that holds your teeth — and that bone doesn’t grow back. Every reputable source, from the Mayo Clinic to UK public-health guidance, makes the same point: prompt treatment of gingivitis usually reverses it and stops it becoming periodontitis. That window is the whole reason to act while it’s still “just bleeding gums.”
Treated now (gingivitis)
Surface inflammation only, no bone loss. A professional cleaning plus good home care reverses it — gums return to firm, healthy and pink, usually in a single visit.
Left alone (periodontitis)
Infection reaches below the gumline and the supporting bone is lost. That damage is permanent; treatment then manages and controls the disease rather than reversing it.
What we do about it
Treating gingivitis is usually simple, and for most people it starts and ends with one thorough professional cleaning. Here’s what that involves.
First, we find out where you stand
Your first appointment is an assessment. We check your gums for bleeding, swelling and pocket depth, look for tartar above and below the gumline, and — crucially — confirm whether this is still reversible gingivitis or whether it has started to progress. You leave knowing exactly what you’re dealing with and what it will take to fix it. If we can see it’s early, we’ll usually treat it the same day.
The core of the treatment
Once plaque hardens into tartar, no amount of brushing at home will shift it — it has to be removed with an ultrasonic scaler. We clear the tartar and bacterial build-up from along and just under the gumline, then polish the teeth so plaque finds it harder to stick again. For most gingivitis, this is the treatment; you can read exactly what the appointment involves on our scaling and cleaning page. If build-up has reached deeper below the gumline, we may recommend a more thorough deep cleaning, done more meticulously and sometimes over two visits with the area numbed for comfort.
So it doesn’t come back
A cleaning resets your gums; your daily routine keeps them that way. Before you leave, we show you the brushing and flossing technique that actually reaches the gumline, because gingivitis returns if the plaque comes back. For most patients that’s all it takes — no medication, no surgery. Where inflammation is stubborn we may add a short course of an antibacterial mouthrinse, but that supports the cleaning; it doesn’t replace it.
Any clinic can offer a cleaning — where it helps to have a specialist is in reading whether your gums are truly still early, and treating them so it doesn’t come back. Gum care at Arasu is led by , with an Associate Fellowship in Laser Dentistry from the World Clinical Laser Institute (USA). If your gums turn out to need more than a clean, the full team is under one roof — no being referred elsewhere mid-treatment.
What to expect
Gums typically start looking and feeling better within a few days of a professional clean, and the bleeding usually settles within a week or two once you’re cleaning effectively at home. Most gingivitis needs a single appointment; heavier cases may need one follow-up. We’ll give you a realistic timeline for your gums specifically at your visit.
The honest part
We’d rather you booked knowing the full picture, so a few things worth being straight about.
Transparent pricing
Gingivitis is one of the more affordable things to treat, precisely because you’re catching it early — a professional cleaning costs a fraction of what treating advanced gum disease or replacing a lost tooth does. Here’s what to expect at Arasu Dental Care.
| Item | Cost at Arasu Dental Care | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation & gum assessment | ₹300 – ₹500 | Examination to confirm gingivitis vs. periodontitis and plan treatment |
| Professional cleaning (scaling) | ₹1,500 – ₹3,000 | The core treatment for most gingivitis — removes tartar and plaque |
| Full-mouth deep cleaning (if needed) | ₹12,000 – ₹15,000 | For heavier build-up or early progression, done meticulously over one or two visits |
What you pay depends on how much build-up there is and whether a basic clean or a deeper one is needed — which is exactly what the assessment tells us. We’ll give you the figure for your case before we start, and we accept UPI, cards, cash and EMI.

FAQs
Yes. Gingivitis is the reversible stage of gum disease. Once the plaque and tartar causing the inflammation are professionally removed and you keep the area clean at home, the gums heal and go back to being firm and healthy. What can’t be reversed is the stage after it, periodontitis, which is why treating gingivitis promptly matters so much.
A routine cleaning for gingivitis is comfortable and doesn’t usually need numbing — most people find it no worse than a longer polish. If a deeper clean is needed because build-up has reached below the gumline, we numb the area so it’s comfortable throughout.
Most gingivitis is treated in a single appointment. Gums generally start looking better within days, and bleeding usually settles within a week or two of effective home cleaning. Heavier cases may need one follow-up visit.
Bleeding usually means plaque is sitting at the gumline despite brushing — often because the technique isn’t reaching the edge of the gum, or because tartar has already formed and brushing can’t remove it. Bleeding that continues for more than a week or two is a reason to have your gums checked, not to brush harder.
For most people one professional cleaning clears the current inflammation. Whether it stays gone depends on daily home care and a check-up roughly every six months. Gingivitis returns if plaque is allowed to build up again, so the maintenance is as important as the treatment.
Bleeding gums are the main symptom; gingivitis is the most common cause. Treating the gingivitis is what stops the bleeding. If your gums bleed for another reason — for example during pregnancy or from a medication — we take that into account when we assess you.
Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation begins destroying the bone that supports your teeth. That damage is permanent and, in advanced cases, leads to loose teeth and tooth loss. Treating it while it’s still gingivitis avoids all of that.
