Three MDS-qualified periodontists · One gum-care team

Periodontist in Coimbatore Meet the gum specialists at Arasu Dental Care

Your gums and jawbone are what hold your teeth in place. When gum disease sets in, it works quietly — bleeding gums first, then recession, then teeth that start to loosen — and by the time it hurts, supporting bone has often already been lost. A periodontist is the dental specialist trained to stop that process and save teeth that are already at risk. At Arasu Dental Care, gum problems in Coimbatore are handled by MDS-qualified periodontists — not passed off as a routine cleaning — so the disease underneath is actually treated, not just polished over.

Gum disease is far more common than most people expect. Research pooling studies across India puts it at around half of all adults, and it remains one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. So if your gums bleed when you brush, look longer than they used to, or feel like they are pulling away from your teeth, seeing a gum specialist early is what keeps a manageable problem from turning into a lost tooth.

Not sure whether you need a gum specialist yet? A consultation at either Coimbatore branch tells you exactly where your gums stand — and whether treatment is even needed right now.

Do You Need One Yet?

When you should see a periodontist — not just a dentist

A general dentist handles routine cleanings and is usually the first to spot a gum problem. A periodontist is the specialist who takes over once gum disease has moved past the surface — much like being referred from a family doctor to a consultant. It is worth booking with our periodontists directly if you notice any of these:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss — or bleed on their own.
  • Gums that look like they are shrinking back, making your teeth look longer.
  • Teeth that feel loose, or have started to drift, tilt or gap.
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste that brushing does not fix.
  • Pus, swelling or ongoing tenderness around the gum line.
  • A dentist has already told you that you have deep gum pockets, bone loss, or pyorrhea (the common name for periodontitis).

Gum disease also tends to advance with age — in India's national survey data, very few adults over 44 have fully healthy gums — and it is closely linked with diabetes and heart health. That is why we treat it as a health issue, not a cosmetic one.

An honest note: if your only concern is a routine clean or a little bleeding you have just noticed, you may not need a periodontist yet — and we will tell you so, rather than put you in front of a specialist you do not require. Our general and preventive dentistry team can start you off and refer up if there is more going on. Either way, you leave your first visit knowing exactly which level of care your gums actually need.

Meet The Team

Meet our periodontists

In India, periodontics — the care of gums and the bone that supports your teeth — is a recognised three-year MDS specialisation. When you are choosing where to have gum treatment, the single most useful thing you can check is whether the person treating you actually holds that qualification. Ours do — and we have three of them under one roof, more than most clinics in Coimbatore.

How to check you are seeing a real gum specialist: look for the letters ‘MDS (Periodontics)’ after the name. Many clinics advertise ‘gum treatment’ but have it done by a general dentist. At Arasu Dental Care, your gum treatment is planned and carried out by a qualified periodontist. Browse the full team on our doctors page.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

For routine cleanings and check-ups, a general dentist is enough. You need a periodontist when gum disease has progressed — bleeding that keeps coming back, gum recession, deep pockets, loose teeth, or a referral from your dentist. If you are not sure, book a consultation and we will tell you honestly which level of care you need.

A dentist completes a BDS and handles general dental care. A periodontist has done an additional three-year MDS specialising in the gums and the bone that supports teeth, including gum surgery, grafting and implants. Think of it as the difference between a family doctor and a specialist consultant.

Early gum disease (gingivitis) can usually be reversed with professional cleaning and better home care. Once it advances to periodontitis, the disease can be controlled and stopped from getting worse, and lost tissue can sometimes be partly rebuilt — but it is managed rather than fully reversed. Catching it early is why seeing a periodontist sooner matters.

Most gum treatment is done under local anaesthesia, so you should feel little to nothing during the procedure. Our periodontists lean on minimally invasive and laser-assisted techniques where suitable, which generally means less discomfort afterwards and faster healing than traditional surgery. Some tenderness for a day or two is normal and settles quickly.

It depends on the stage. A consultation is ₹300–₹500, routine scaling is ₹1,500–₹3,000, and deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is ₹12,000–₹15,000. Surgical treatments such as flap surgery and grafting are quoted after your assessment, since they depend on how many areas are involved. We give you a clear estimate before starting.

If you have been treated for gum disease, we usually recommend a maintenance visit every three to four months, because gum disease can return without regular upkeep. If your gums are healthy, a general check-up and cleaning twice a year is typically enough.
